The experience and story behind The Sound Souls

The story of The Sound Souls began long before it had a name.

For founder Debbie Kneale, an important part of that story began at 22, with the diagnosis of a degenerative spinal condition and a prognosis that she was likely to be in a wheelchair by the age of 30.

Determined to create a different outcome, she began studying anatomy, physiology and psychology.

That ultimately led to a wide range of professional qualifications, including fitness and exercise, teaching and assessment, NLP, hypnotherapy, EFT and more.

Debbie has since taught, trained and assessed professionals, and created courses and learning resources across a wide range of subjects, working with individuals and organisations of all sizes both in the UK and internationally, live and online.

Known for her warm, down-to-earth and empowering teaching style, Debbie is also known for her ability to identify the core skills, knowledge and understanding needed to practise safely and effectively within each discipline and then turning those into clear, practical and engaging training designed to develop both competence and confidence.

Music had always been an integral part of Debbie's work in fitness, teaching and presenting, and then her relationship with sound took on a different significance.

During another profoundly difficult period, Debbie experienced the impact of a sound bath for herself.

That sparked an immediate desire to understand it more deeply and learn how to share it with others.

That led to further study, training and exploration of sound, its benefits and application.

As her understanding developed, Debbie began to see how the same principles that had shaped her work for decades — identifying the foundations needed for safe, effective practice and building clear, practical training around them — could be applied to working with sound.

Those many threads of experience have now come together as The Sound Souls.

The meaning behind The Sound Souls name

Sound is central to what we do — but the word has other meanings too.

In some places, calling someone sound means they're a good person — genuine, trustworthy and someone you're happy to have around.

Sound is also used to describe being well or in good condition. We talk about being “of sound mind”, for example.

And the Souls part is about being a human being.

We are called ‘human beings’, yet we spend so much of our lives as human doings — working, thinking and getting things done, often forgetting to give ourselves permission to simply be.

And when we do, we can reconnect with a deeply human sense of wholeness, peace and wonder.

That sits quietly at the heart of everything we do.
